Since 1879, Hatch Show Print has been preserving the art of letterpress printing in Nashville, Tennessee. Known for its bold, expressive concert posters, the shop has created prints for generations of musicians, from country legends to contemporary performers. Its distinctive visual language, built on vintage wood type, hand-carved imagery, and the rich textures of traditional printing, has become an enduring part of American music culture.
During my internship, I worked alongside Hatch's printers and designers to bring commissioned posters from initial concept to finished print. Working primarily with clients in the music industry, I learned to translate an artist's identity and vision into designs that embrace the unique possibilities of letterpress: arranging physical type, layering colors, and printing each element through the pressure of a traditional press. I also worked with Hatch's extensive collection of vintage type and printing equipment, gaining an appreciation for the craftsmanship, experimentation, and history that continue to shape the shop's work.
